The PE Curriculum Council visited other school districts to look at new ideas for their curriculum.
March 16, 2011. Barry Schmidt presented an update on Fit-trac. The district is now sign up to the system and teachers can now input scores on the system. There was also discussion on what levels will be using fit-trac. It was
agreed that the middle school and GES would implement fit-trac as a way of showing the growth the students have made.
2. The implementation of new units was discussed. No totally new units; except a roller skating unit is being done.
3. The reduction in physical education budgets and it’s impact was talked about. The consensus was that the reduced budget will have little effect on the physical education programs.
Next meeting is April 20th, Early Release Date

1. An update on fit-trac was given by Barry Schmidt. There have been multiple attempts to sign up for the program but there has been no reply from the administrator. He will continue to try and sign-up for the program.
2. The addition of an athletic physical education class was not approved. The idea of such a class is still recommended by the entire physical education and health staff. It was then agreed to form a small group of teachers (3) to do more investigating and put together a better proposal of the class so the class can be implemented for the 2012-2013 school year.
3. The elementary teachers discussed how the assessments that were revised last year are relating to Standards based grading. Standards based grading is currently being implemented in grades 2-4.
4. The Middle school and High school teachers discussed their health curriculums and looked at possible overlays between the two.
Next meeting is March 16th

1. The addition of an athletic physical education class at the high school was discussed. Many thoughts were shared on the subject. It was suggested to have a meeting with all head high schools coaches to get their input into the topic. A small group of P.E. teachers will be investigating other schools who have this type of class, finding the number of students who would have an interest in such a class and revising a syllabus to presented for approval.
2. Barry Schmidt presented information on a secure web based fitness testing program called fit-trac. Fit-trac will track of all fitness testing scores as students progress from elementary to high school. The program is free and can be managed by the teachers. It was agreed to start this program at the 4th grade level and immediately start the process of signing up and input fitness scores for this school year.
The next meeting will be January 2011.

The P.E./Health curriculum Council discussed a number of topics in its first meeting of the year:
1. The possibility of tracking student fitness scores through a program called fit-trac. This is a free program and is web based so any teacher can access it at any school. This program would be used from 4th grade on up through high school. Barry Schmidt will look into the program more as it is being presented at the P.E. convention.
2. The council discussed the ways they can promote P.E. through newsletters and updates on the gkschools website.
3. Health and drivers ed. are in need of new textbooks, but due to budget restraints that would not be possible at this time. Money for the textbooks would have to come from a different source.
4. All teachers were asked to get their Physical education maps updated and on the current year, if not done on the last institute day.
5. All teachers noted that they don’t incorporate to many health topics into physical education. Using the health descriptors the teachers were able to see which health topics can easily be taught in P.E. The high school teachers made sure to not double up on topic covered in the Health 1 class.
The next meeting will be Dec. 8 and we will be mapping health topics we are incorporating into our P.E. curriculum.
