The Social Studies Curriculum Council began its third year of work this month. The council consists of a social studies teacher from GKHS and the GKMS, elementary teachers from GES and KES, as well as a special education teacher.
Over the last two years, the committee has developed goal statements and researched best teaching practices in the social studies field. Having looked at a several text series over the past year, the committee focused in on two that aligned with national standards, state standards and our committee goal statements. Century 21st Skills is a K-12 curriculum that involves active learning lessons. With a great deal of technology incorporated into the curriculum, this series offers students a chance to learn in new and exciting ways. History Alive is yet another innovative curriculum that provides students with rich, hands-on learning opportunities. This series also spans k-12, and has outstanding supplemental materials for teachers and students.
The Social Studies Curriculum Council has determined that History Alive is the best fit for our district in terms of a possible pilot series. As the economic challenges of the current times continue to be a major factor, the piloting of this series is currently on hold. The committee will continue to meet and develop ideas about how to best serve our students in the social studies realm.
